A newly unearthed Jurassic fossil from east China is prompting scientists to rethink one of the most basic assumptions about bird evolution: that early birds always evolved toward better flight capability.

China's manned deep-sea submersible Jiaolong successfully completed its 467th dive. The dive reached a depth of approximately 4,400 meters.

Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region has experienced a sustained warming and wetting trend over the past three decades, contributing to the expansion of lakes, wetlands and oases, according to findings from the region's third comprehensive scientific expedition.

A Chinese research team has found that a pulsar discovered by the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) is part of a primordial triple star system still in the process of evolving, according to a study published Friday in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Global Humane Society, the international brand of American Humane Society, has awarded Dr. Ding Wang, Professor, Institute of Hydrobiology Chinese Academy of Sciences, with the 2026 Wolfgang Kiessling International Prize for Species Conservation. This award was created in honor of Wolfgang F. Kiessling, the founder of Loro Parque and a global leader in conservation.

The manned deep-sea submersible Jiaolong is pictured outside its hangar aboard the research vessel Deep Sea No. 1 in the western Pacific Ocean, on Oct. 10, 2026. China's research vessel Deep Sea No. 1, carrying manned deep-sea submersible Jiaolong, arrived at East Caroline Basin in the western Pacific Ocean on Saturday for deep-sea scientific research. This marks the 466th dive of Jiaolong, with a planned diving depth of about 4,500 meters.

A group of Chinese scientists has uncovered the mystery behind how an ancient gene regulates the development of brain folds, shedding new light on the evolution of the human brain. The findings were recently published in Nature Genetics.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences launched a national scientific journal publishing group on Wednesday, marking a significant step in the country's efforts to build world-class scientific journals. Officially named Beijing Zhongke Journal Publishing & Media Group Co, the new institution aims to address long-standing structural challenges in China's scientific publishing sector, including small-scale operations, fragmented resources and limited global influence.

The 77th International Astronautical Congress has concluded in Türkiye. Guo Huadong, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a scientist at the Aerospace Information Research Institute, received the 2026 International Astronautical Federation Hall of Fame Award in recognition of his lifelong contributions to the field of astronautics.

Scientists with China's Third Xinjiang Scientific Expedition announced on Saturday that they had found more than 24,000 glaciers in the region and warned of accelerating melt there. The glacier study is part of a five-year expedition, which was launched in 2021 by the Ministry of Science and Technology. The previous two were conducted in the 1950s and 1980s.

A type of moss discovered in a desert in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region can survive conditions that would kill most plants, including severe dehydration, intense radiation, extreme cold and Mars-like space environments. This finding is among the major advances of the Third Xinjiang Scientific Expedition, which were released on Saturday in Urumqi, the regional capital city. Scientists describe the moss, Syntrichia caninervis, as "the most resilient desert plant found to date."

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) announced on Tuesday the launch of a new program aimed at achieving breakthroughs at the frontiers of science and producing major original research achievements in key fields.

A delegation of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC), headed by Executive Director Batyr Mamedov, visited the Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The delegation included Azamat Kauazov, Manager of the Climate Change and Sustainable Energy Programme.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has released its development plan for the 15th Five-Year Plan period (2026-2030), setting priority directions for sci-tech breakthroughs in three major fields: basic research, strategic high technologies and sustainable development.

A team at the Institute of Oceanology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS) developed the modified-clay technology based on flocculation and sedimentation, providing a practical solution to that challenge. Recently, at a UNESCO conference in Paris this summer, a global scientific program on harmful algal bloom mitigation, led by the IOCAS, was unveiled. From the Bohai Sea to Malaysian waters and Turkey's Gulf of Izmir, a technology developed in China has become an increasingly visible tool in global efforts to mitigate HABs.

Nestled in a natural karst depression in Pingtang County, southwest China's Guizhou Province, the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope – known to the world as FAST, or "China Sky Eye" – marks its 10th anniversary in 2026. As large as 30 football pitches and composed of 4,450 reflector panels, it has quietly reshaped humanity's understanding of the universe from its mountain cradle.

In a recent study, researchers used joint observations from China's Einstein Probe satellite and the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory to discover, around a pulsar roughly 4,600 light-years from Earth, an extraordinarily long X-ray trail never before seen in its entirety. The trail runs in precisely the same direction as the ultra-high-energy gamma-ray radiation detected by LHAASO.

The linear accelerator of the Hefei Advanced Light Facility (HALF) successfully generated and delivered an electron beam on Sunday, marking a key step forward in the construction of the world's most advanced fourth-generation synchrotron radiation facility in the low-energy range.
