Chinese Scientists Identify over 30 New Deep Sea Species

May 30, 2018

Chinese scientists have found over 30 kinds of new deep sea species in the last two years, according to the chief scientist from China Ocean Mineral Resources Research and Development Association (COMRA).

The COMRA also released a series of videos showing activities of rarely-seen deep sea creatures in the seamounts during an international conference hosted by the association and International Seabed Authority in Qingdao City of east China's Shandong Province, scheduled between Monday and Tuesday.

The video shows a shoal of red deep sea shrimps moving together; it also shows long-tail deep sea cod which are usually found in a region over 5,000 meters below surface.

A cutthroat eel can be seen twisting its body and trying to bit the bait besides the camera. A ratfish wanders past the camera, with a pair of impressive big eyes. Yet its eyes can see nothing, and uses lateral line to sense the change of current. (CGTN)
