The world's first finless porpoise bred in captivity became ten years old last month, according to the Institute of Hydrobiology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS) on Wednesday. The species is critically endangered. There are only around 1,000 finless porpoises in the wild, they live in the Yangtze River and two lakes fed by the busy waterway.
The current finless porpoise population, according to scientists, is less than 1,000. As one of the most endangered animals, the finless porpoise is mainly to be found in the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River and the connecting Poyang and Dongting lakes.
