HFIPS Plays A Role in Breaking Key Technology of High Temperature Superconducting Current Limiter

Jul 02, 2020

A joint team carried out a test successfully in a 10.5 kV grid connected operation test system of superconducting current limiter which was built for the first time in China at the high-voltage test field of Hushitai, Liaoning Province.

This team consists of the Institute of Plasma Physics under Hefei Institutes of Physical Science (ASIPP, HFIPS), State Grid Liaoning Electric Power Co., Ltd., China Electric Power Research Institute Co., Ltd., Tsinghua University and Shenyang Tebian Electric Apparatus Stock Co., Ltd..

The success in grid-connected test verifies the operation experiment technology of the magnetic bias superconducting current limiter.

High temperature superconducting (HTS) current limiter aims to limit the fault current due to short-circuit fault and other reasons in a very short time by generating high impedance in the series circuit.

According to the operation test, the fast superconducting current limiting action response was achieved within five minutes of the fault current, the high-voltage insulation performance was more than seven times of the rated voltage, and the superconducting current limiting resistance was more than twice of the rated voltage.

The team believed the key technology breakthrough they had achieved can provide the technical basis for the fault current limiter of HV AC circuit breaker and lays the technical foundation for the popularization and application of HTS current limiter.

According to the team, the project has passed acceptance test by examine group.
