As a scientist of physical geography and environmental change, Chen Fahu has conducted in-depth research on the environment in Asia, especially the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau. The Association for Trans-Eurasia Exchange and Silk-Road Civilization Development he founded is a platform for scientific exchanges among experts from various countries. In an interview with CGTN's Li Dongning, Chen Fahu talked about environmental protection and communication between scientists.
Lai Yuanming, 52, a leading permafrost expert, provided the solution. His research solved the two major problems - preventing the track from buckling due to ice melting on the roadbed, and improving thermal stability that led to Tibet's first railway. The success of his research has brought Lai honors, including a number of science and technology awards from the Chinese central government and the local government in Gansu province. He was elected as a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2011 - the top honor for Chinese researchers - at the age of 49.
The fungus, which is also known as worm grass, is used in Chinese Traditional Medicine (CTM) as a "cure all" ingredient. It is extremely sought-after and fetches a similar price per gram to gold. According to Qinghai Herding and Veterinarian Academy, between 1970 and 1979 one collector could harvest about 3,000 stalks daily, while between 2000 and 2009 yields had dropped significantly to 150. The institute is planning to establish a preservation base, similar to an industrial farm, in Zadoi, which it says will create a favorable environment for the fungi to flourish.
