A series of lathyrane diterpenes were isolated from caper spurge (Euphorbia lathyris L.) seed oil and have activity against HIV-1 replication. Thus, a reliable, fast and low-cost analysis method, especial in complex matrix in clinical experiment, for this class of compounds remains desirable.
In order to establish corresponding analysis method, researchers from Prof. WU Zhijun's lab at the Chengdu Institute of Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences firstly investigated the structure characteristic of seven lathyrane diterpenes using electrospray mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) method.
Dr. WU and his colleagues revealed three fragmentation rules of lathyrane diterpenes. And the corresponding information can be used for the rapid analysis of cipadesin limonoids, including isomers with similar structure, in complex mixtures from plant extract.
The method is a rapid and new analysis method of lathyrane diterpenes and is especially valuable for reliable and rapid identification of these compounds or their metabolites in complex mixtures.
This research entitled "Analysis of lathyrane diterpenes using electrospray ionization quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry" was published in Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry.
