Chinese scientists have developed an artificial sponge material that can separate oil and water to be used for treating water contaminated by industrial sewage. A paper on the research undertaken by the Institute of Metal Research under the Chinese Academy of Sciences was published on the latest issue of the international journal Advanced Materials Interfaces.
The 2017 Nature’s 10 – Nature’s annual list of ten people who mattered in science in the past year – appears in the journal this week. Chinese physicist Pan Jianwei helped his country to the forefront of long-distance, ultra-secure quantum communications, reporting that his team beamed the quantum state of a photon here on Earth to another on an orbiting satellite 1,400 kilometers above.

The China-based FAST, the world's largest single-dish radio telescope, has discovered three new pulsars, the National Astronomical Observatories of China (NAOC) said Tuesday. So far, FAST has identified a total of nine pulsars since its trial operations began in September 2016.

Ding Zhongli has been elected chairman of the Central Committee of the China Democratic League (CDL). Ding, born in 1957, is also a member of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, the country's top legislature, and vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
