The National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC) has joined the Thirty Meter Telescope Project (TMT). As an Observer, China will participate in planning the development of what will be the world's most advanced and capable astronomical observatory. "We believe that the Thirty Meter Telescope will provide an otherwise unattainable opportunity for the Chinese astronomical community to make significant discoveries, perform cutting-edge science, and advance technological development," said Jun Yan, director of the NAOC.
The 2009 Ho Leung Ho Lee (HLHL) Foundation Award Ceremony & the 15th Anniversary of the Establishment of the HLHL Foundation was held on Nov. 10 at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse, Beijing. AMS02 (the second stage project of the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer experiment) would take the American space shuttle STS-134 of "Endeavour" and lift off on 7:30 a. m. EDT, July 29th, 2010 in Kennedy Space Center, USA, announced Prof. Samuel Chao Chung Ting from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology recently at CERN, Geneva. It will head to the International Space Station for a three year mission. AMS02 was developed by scientists from Institute of High Energy Physics, CAS in collaboration with their colleagues from the Chinese Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALVT), Italy and France. It can measure electron and photon up to 1 TeV.
A huge amount of scientific data has been accumulated by the Chinese CE-1 lunar orbiter. In response to worldwide attention to the Chang’E-1 lunar mission, a series of technical papers authored by Chinese scientists are published in the new special Vol.39 Issue 10 of “Science in China Series G: Physics, Mechanics & Astronomy” on October 20, 2009, and in Vol. 54 Issue 20 of the “Chinese Science Bulletin”, to report on China’s new discoveries in lunar science, as well as new tracking techniques developed for deep space exploration.
Lu Yongxiang, president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), attended the fourth World Science Forum (WSF) held in Budapest on 5–7 November 2009 and delivered a speech on scientific innovation towards 2050. The speech “Innovation: towards 2050” gave analysis on main challenges and trends of world’s science and technology in the future and put out a blueprint for the privileged development of S&T till 2050.
