An over 20-member official delegation from the German State of North Rhine-Westphalia visited Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences (SIBS) on Nov. 21st. The delegation was led by Dr. Andreas Pinkwart, Deputy Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia and Minister of Innovation, Science, Research and Technology of North Rhine-Westphalia. Dr. CHEN Xiaoya, president of SIBS and Dr. JIN Li, managing director of CAS-MPG Partner Institute for Computational Biology (PICB) welcomed the delegation.
"Biogeochemical Processes of Biogenic Elements in the China Marginal Seas" edited by Professor SONG Jinming from the Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, has been published by Springer-Verlag GmbH & Zhejiang University Press. The monograph is a landmark in marine biogeochemistry development in China. It also lays a good foundation for further study in this field.
On November 19-20, a strategic review team composed of 11 international botanic garden professionals convened in Guangzhou, China to assess the recent progress of the South China Botanical Garden (SCBG) and to evaluate a draft ten-year strategic plan for the institution.
The 30th Meeting of the U.S./ PRC Joint Committee on High Energy Physics took place on November 19-20, 2009 at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, USA. The Chinese delegation was led by Dr. LI Ding, director general of the Bureau of Basic Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the U.S. delegation was led by Dr. Dennis Kovar, associate director of the Office of Science for High Energy Physics, US Department of Energy.
A French delegation headed by Dr. Bernard Belloc, permanent advisor to the President of the French Republic Nicolas Sarkozy for higher education and research visited Institut Pasteur of Shanghai (IPS) on Nov.17, accompanied by Mr. Thierry Mathou, the French Consul General in Shanghai. Prof. SUN Bing, Co-Director of IPS welcomed the delegation on the presence of Prof. Zhiyuan Zhu, Vice President of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Shanghai Branch.
The Nangunhe Nature Reserve in Southwest Yunnan province, China has long been presumed to be the last stronghold of lar (or white-handed) gibbons (Hylobates lar) in China and likely to be the last place of occurrence of Hylobates lar yunnanensis. JIANG Xuelong and GUAN Zhenhua from Kunming Institute of Zoology (KIZ) in collaboration with scientists from Switzerland conducted a comprehensive survey to assess the status of lar gibbons at Nangunhe.
