Sino-Russian Research Team Develops New Hybrid Seaweed
Researchers from Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and their Russian colleagues recently succeeded in breeding a new type of hybrid seaweed.
The Sino-Russian research team experimented the breeding of Laminaria Japonica from uncultivated subpopulation in China with that of subpopulations in Dalnegorsk (north latitude 44) and Vladivostok (north latitude 43), Russia.
They successfully obtained sporophyte from 6 mating combinations through cloning Haploid Phases of geographically separated subpopulations. The sporophyte is currently under breeding test in the Marine Biological Culture Collection Centre of the Committee on Type Culture Collection, CAS.
The research is part of the joint research project initiated by CAS and Institute of Marine Biology Far East Branch, Russian Academy of Sciences.
The success of the experiment marks a big progress in breeding new Laminaria Japonica varieties.
