CAS President LU Yongxiang has received the Harnack Medal, the highest distinction that the Max Planck Society (MPS) can confer, for his success as the top-ranking representative of Chinese science. The award was presented by MPS President Peter Gruss during a meeting of the MPS Senate on 24 November in Berlin.
Established in 1924, the Harnack medal is named after Adolf von Harnack, the founding president of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society, predecessor of MPS. The last time it was presented was in 2004 to Hubert Markl, a former MPS president. Prof. Lu is the second non-German awardee of the Medal in the history. The first one was Prof. Haim Harari, former president of the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel.
