Nature uses helical chirality as a structural motif to construct biological organizational hierarchy. The supramolecular helical assemblies are often achieved by noncovalent interactions between asymmetric molecules or chiral building blocks.
Prof.Liu Minhua and colleagues of the CAS Institute of Chemistry have demonstrated that macroscopic helicity can be realized through unique arrangements of achiral molecules without any chiral auxiliaries. Their findings have been reported at several academic journals, including Journal of the American Chemical Society (April 30,2003) and Chemical Communications (No.1, 2003).
