China Sets up Fossil Preservation Foundation
China set up a national fund-raising foundation on Friday to promote fossil preservation and geological environment protection and cultivate scientific and cultural understanding among the public.
The China Fossil Preservation Foundation (CFPF), approved by China's State Council, was initiated by over 20 specialists and academicians in 2005, when illegal mining and smuggling of fossils became more rampant in the country. The foundation will help promote scientific popularization and education associated with fossils and the geological environment, and financial aid in key research programs in this field.
Domestic and overseas funds will be raised to help run the foundation, said Jiang Chengsong, director-general of the CFPF. About 70 percent of the fund will be used for the public cause, 20 percent for investment and 10 percent for the management of the foundation staff, said its guiding principle.
The foundation, sponsored by the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and China Institute of Geo-Environment Monitoring, Ministry of Land and Resources, has opened its website both in Chinese and in English.
The foundation will focus on the construction of China Dinosaur Museum in Macau, fossil research and investigation, and an exhibition of selected fossils to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China this year.
