status quo of China's energy consumption, saying that the Chinese government pays close attention to the coordinated social and economic development and to the more efficient use of energy. He gave a detailed introduction about CAS involvement in energy sources development and the research project of the InterAcademy Council (IAC) on sustainable energy growth. The CAS president called on the Shell Company to step up its cooperation with CAS on research and development of renewable as well as fossil energy sources in line with China's actual conditions.
Prof. Lu said that the energy issue has become a focus of common concern across the world. Efforts should be made to find solutions to its bottleneck problems from the overall and strategic perspectives. As far as the fossil energy sources are concerned, work should be done to raise its consumption efficiency and reduce its impact on the environment. At the same time, technical innovation on renewable energy resources should be greatly encouraged so as to promote the transition from fossil energy sources to the renewable ones.
