A nationwide survey on soil erosion launched in Beijing
Under the joint sponsorship of CAS, Ministry of Water Resources (MWR) and CAE (the Chinese Academy of Engineering), a nationwide comprehensive survey on water-and-soil losses and ecological safety has been kicked off. The launching ceremony for the survey was held recently in Beijing. CAS Vice President LI Jiayang was among high-ranking officials present at the meeting.
With an objective of making an all-round inspection of the current state of water loss and soil erosion in China, the one and half year project will involve more than 200 experts, including 23 CAS and CAE members, who are among the most celebrated scientists in this country.
It is the largest, trans-departmental, multi-disciplinary and inter-occupational expedition nationwide on the subject since the founding of the People's Republic in 1949. The researchers are from different organizations and various fields, ranging from ecology, the environment, natural resources to law and policy studies.
The task is of significance, notes Prof. Li Jiayang, because it is conducive to a variety of national endeavors such as those to enhance China's ecological infrastructure, enforce the doctrine of science-oriented development, and foster sustainable development in the fields of ecology and economy.
The survey will made an objective assessment, by combing different regions, on the status quo of water loss and soil erosion, their ecological risks, existing technical routes for their prevention and control, and the consequent results.
In addition, efforts will be made to review the previous practice in ecological improvement and protection, to update the conception on the inter-relations between man and nature, to make suggestions on the objectives, standardized norms, technical routes and methods for water-loss management for main eco-types in this country. The researchers will also work hard to identify some pressing and cardinal problems and issues for the water loss control and management in a comprehensive way. They will further arouse the public's awareness of protecting the water-and-soil trove and ecological safety, and provide scientific grounds and strategic countermeasures for the government's decision makers in the field of macroscopic eco-development.
