Six scientists were elected new foreign members at the 12th General Assembly of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) held from June 2 to 6 in Beijing:

    Prof. Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, Computer Science Department, Princeton University, USA; member of US National Academy of Sciences, fellow of American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

    Prof. Guy B de-The, Institue Pasteur, member of the French Academy of Sciences, the French Academy of Medicine, Foreign Associate of U.S. National Academy of Sciences.

    Prof. Jean-Marie Lehn, College de France, ISIS, Universite Louis Pasteur; member of the French Academy of Sciences; foreign associate of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the Third World Academy of Sciences, and fellow of American Academy of Arts and Sciences; winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1987.

    Prof. Richard N. Zare, Department of Chemistry, Stanford University, member of U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and American Academy of Arts and Sciences; Foreign Member of British Royal Society.

    Prof. Torsten N. Wiesel, the Rockefeller University, USA; member of US National Academy of Sciences, of US National Academy of Engineering, foreign member of British Royal Society; foreign member of Royal Sweden Academy of Sciences; member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences; winner of the Nobel prize in medicine in 1980.

    Prof. Yum-Tong Siu, Department of Mathematics, Harvard University, member of the US National Academy of Sciences.

    According to "By-law of the Membership of the Chinese Academy of Sciences", CAS foreign members should be scholars and experts of foreign nationality who enjoy high academic standing internationally and who have made important contributions to the cause of science and technology in China.
