The China General Microbiological Culture Collection Center (CGMCC) is a nonprofit organization financed by the Chinese Government. As a central culture collection in the cooperative network of various collections in China, the CGMCC is providing its services as a national culture collection. The main functions of the CGMCC are as follows:

    1.To collect, maintain and preserve microorganisms as well as other biological material of relevance for applied biology, microbiology, biotechnology and other areas of research.

    2. To supply and exchange cultures of microorganisms listed in CGMCC catalogue to research, industrial and agricultural laboratories, education and to foreign scientists in accord with national and international laws.

    3. To act as a center for the safe deposit of biological material and the deposit of biological material for patent purposes upon request in China and abroad under national law and the Budapest Treaty.

    Scientific services provided by the CGMCC

    1.Identification and characterization of microorganisms.

    2.Deposit of microorganisms including deposit in the general collection; safe deposit; deposit of biological material for patent purpose.

    3.To provide various services on safe deposit, quality control, scientific consultation and training services.

    4.To provide various bio-information services on microorganisms through the catalogue published and databases on-line.

    Research Activities

    In the CGMCC, the research activities focuses on collection related fields including microbial taxonomy and identification; isolation and classification; biodiversity studies and development of preservation methods for biological material. The CGMCC cooperates with other national or international research groups in the fields of characterization and identification of microorganisms.

    It has, at present, more than 16600 strains of bacteria, yeasts and filamentous fungi which are maintained under biological stable conditions, among them there are 1188 cultures for the patent purpose. The CGMCC continues to endeavor to supply biological research organizations with guaranteed top-quality microorganisms, with some 5700 strains being distributed to domestic and foreign researchers in 2003.
