
CAS formally became a member of the Association of Academies of Sciences in Asia (AASA) at the Fourth General Assembly of AASA held from Sept. 23 to 25 in Tehran, Iran. A CAS delegation headed by CAS Vice President Yang Bailing attended the conference.
AASA is a non-profit international organization of the Asian and Austral region, comprising 18 academies with science and technology interests. Its main objectives are to provide a forum for scientists and technologists to discuss and provide advice on issues related to science and technology, research and development, and the application of technology for national development. Prior to its Fourth Assembly, AASA has 18 members and three associate members. On behalf of CAS, CAS President Lu Yongxiang officially applied for AASA membership in March 2003.
Presented at the AAAS assembly were representatives from Korean Academy of Science and Technology of ROK, Mongolia Academy of Sciences, Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences of Republic of Kazakhstan, National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrghyz Republic, Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan, the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Tajikistan, Turkish Academy of Sciences, Royal Nepal Academy of Science and Technology, and observer organizations.
Together with scientists of various countries, CAS will make contributions to science development in Asia, says Yang Bailing. He also indicates that China is willing to hold the next AASA General Assembly and AASA Board meeting.
