With the theme of climate change: science and sustainable development, the International Symposium on Climate Change was held 31 March to 2 April in Beijing. The aim of the conference is to facilitate discussion and exchanges on the-state-of-the-art advances in the studies on climate change and the worldwide cooperation within its community, says Qin Dahe, chairman of the China National Climate Committee.
The symposium was organized by China National Climate Committee and cosponsored by CAS and other government and academic organizations. About 600 participants from 52 countries and regions attended the conference, at which 300 or so papers were presented.
China' s vice premier Hui Liangyu attended the opening session and made an important speech. Among the distinguished participants were World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Secretary-General Prof. G.O.P. Obasi and the Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
The symposium achieved fruitful results in many aspects, according to Ye Duzheng, chairman of its scientific steering committee and a CAS member with the CAS Institute of Atmospheric Physics. They include: extreme weather conditions and climate change, observed climate variability and change (including palaeo- and instrumental record analyses), detection and attribution of climate change, processes and interactions within climate system, aerosol and regional climate change, climate changes at polar regions and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, climate change and sustainable development, and international cooperation in climate change studies. Eleven young scientists received awards for outstanding papers at the closing ceremony of the meeting.
