The State Development Planning Commission (SDPC) recently approved in principle the Scheme for Establishing the National Research Center for Nanoscience, which had been submitted jointly by CAS Nanometer S&T Center, Peking University, Tsinghua University, and some other units.
The SDPC written approval urges involved parties to establish as early as possible a national center for nanoscience and nanotechnology that has independent legal person status. The center would strive for innovative achievements in a number of important areas and acquiring independent intellectual property rights. It would be a public technical platform facilitating interdisciplinary study and share of resources. It is to become a first-rate Nanometer research base in the world.
Under the guidance of a board of trustees, the director general will be fully in charge of the center' s operation. Its staff members will be recruited on a competitive basis and be allowed to quit at will.
The experiment equipment and other appliances of the center will be accessible to non-staff researchers. It is hoped that the institution will attract capable researchers to join and undertake high-level innovative research.
