Second Climate Symposium Held in Shanghai under the Joint Sponsorship of CAS-TWAS-WMO Forum Held
The second International Symposium on Physico-Mathematical Problems Related to Climate Modeling and Prediction was held on September 22-25 in Shanghai, with short-term (seasonal to interannual) climate prediction as its theme. Beijing was venue of the previous gathering held a year ago.
CAS member Prof. Zeng Qingcun and Dr. D. Carson, chairman of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) co-chaired the opening ceremony of the Shanghai Symposium. Speaking at the ceremony, Prof. G.O.P. Obsai, secretary-general of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), paid high tribute to the forum. He expressed his belief that the forum would make important contributions to the formulation of the fourth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC) under the WMO and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). "Contributions by the forum will also be important to the formulation of policies related to climate changes, particularly to the implementation of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change," he added.
More than 150 scientists attended the Shanghai meeting, including two dozen members from Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Engineering(CAE), National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (NAS), the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE), Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences.
The forum provides a carrier for exchange and cooperative research on major climate changes in relation to sustainable human and social development, a major issue now confronting the world. Prof. Lu Yongxiang, president of the CAS and vice-president of the TWAS, academician M.H.A. Hassan, vice-president of the TWAS, and Prof. G.O.P.Obasi chair the forum. Academician Zeng Qingcun, vice-chairman of the China Association For Science & Technology and council chairman of the Chinese Society of Meteorology, serves as the forum' s executive chairman. The International Center for Climate and Environmental Sciences (ICCES) under the CAS Institute of Atmospheric Physics takes charge of the day-to-day affairs of the forum and the preparations for its Symposiums.
