Sun Honglie, a CAS member and a former vice-president of the CAS, has been elected vice-chairman of the Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA) Executive Committee.
This came during the 18th session of the CODATA September 29-October 3, 2002, in Montreal, Canada, which was held along with a meeting of the CODATA Executive Committee. Sun is the first Chinese scientist to have assumed so important a position in the international community of scientific data.
Sun Honglie headed a delegation of Chinese scientists to the conference with "Frontier of Scientific Data" as the theme. He was invited to deliver to the conference a report entitled "China's Policy Towards and Management of Scientific Data", in which he elaborated on the formulation of the policy, the measures to implement the policy and the achievements China has made under the policy.
The CODATA was founded in 1966 as one of the three independent data organizations under the International Council for Science (ICSU). It now has more than 20 member countries, including China, the United States, Canada, Germany, France and Russia.
