Therapeutic Beam Tests and First Cell & Animal Experiments Done Successfully in Deep-seated Tumor Heavy-ion Therapy Terminal at HIRFL-CSR

Dec 31, 2008

Recently researchers at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences have conducted therapeutic beam tests and cell & animal experiments in the deep-seated heavy-ion therapy terminal at HIRFL-CSR(the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou-Cooling Storage Ring). Carbon ion beams with energies of 150~200MeV/u, which are favorable to treat tumors at depths of 5~8cm, were employed in the tests and experiments. Uniform irradiation fields were shaped by using the scanning magnets equipped in the therapy terminal in the tests. The uniformity of the irradiation fields was verified to meet the requirement of clinical trial with heavy ions. In the pre-clinical experiments, lots of basic radiobiological data concerning heavy-ion cancer therapy have been acquired. Through the tests and experiments, it has been proven that the deep-seated heavy-ion therapy terminal can provide basic conditions suitable for carrying out clinical trial of heavy ion therapy. The first deep-seated tumor patient treatments with heavy ions are expected to get started in the therapy terminal at HIRFL-CSR in the near future.
