Progress in Development of Method for Direct Identification of Super-heavy Nuclei

Dec 31, 2008

The synthesis of super-heavy nuclei and its following separation and identification are one of the hot topics in current nuclear physics. Aiming at direct identification of the atomic number and its masses of super-heavy nuclei, a new method, based on the atomic spectroscopy, laser technique and ion trap, was invented and now being under development at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The laser system was specially designed to produce UV light and its output wavelength can be tuned continuously from visible to ultra-violet range. The installation of the laser system was completed. A testing run of the system, using Pb as an analog to super-heavy nuclei, was performed successfully. The signals of resonant ionization of Pb atoms were obtained through different ionization routines. Researchers are presently preparing the testing run for the resonant ionization of singly charged ions.
