A deep ultraviolet (DUV) solid-state laser device, invented by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), has recently passed testing, making China the only country in possession of such technology. "This is a successful example of China independently developing a sophisticated instrument," said the panel which acknowledged the achievement on September 6.
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has called for efforts to tackle challenges in the country's urbanization wave and seek quality and efficiency in this process. A six-million-year-old fossilized cranium of a juvenile ape has been unearthed in southwest China's Yunnan Province, a rare find paleontologists hope may help unravel the mystery of human origins. The remains is only the second recovered cranium belonging to a juvenile ape inhabiting Eurasia in the Miocene that dates back to 23 to 5 million years ago, Ji Xueping, a researcher who led the study, told a news conference on Thursday.
Six pairs of researchers received the 2012 CAS International Cooperation Award for Young Scientists at a ceremony on Aug. 30 in Beijing. The award, which was launched in 2011, honors young international scientists and their CAS collaborators for innovative research undertaken through the academy.
Chinese archaeologists have again unearthed several dinosaur fossils at a site in Laiyang City, in east China's Shandong Province. More than 130 fossils, including bone and egg remains, were unearthed at the excavation site near the village of Jingangkou, according to sources with the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Human activity along the upper reaches of the Yangtze River - such as building hydropower stations and excessive fishing - has pushed its aquatic ecosystem to the verge of collapse, a report released on Thursday (August 15) warns. Researchers suggested starting a fishing ban along the entire river and enacting a national law to protect the "mother river" of China, as its fishery resources are experiencing a severe recession.
