The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Secondary Military Medical University (SMMU) of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) held a grand opening ceremony this summer for the Translational Medicine Institute, unveiling a new page for the SMMU in the research field of translational medicine.
Inspired by the water-repellent properties of the lotus leaf, a group of scientists in China has discovered a way to impart a fog-free, self-cleaning finish to glass and other transparent materials. "Superhydrophobic" surfaces, such as the lotus leaf, are excellent at repelling water and also boast other "smart" self-cleaning, anti-glare, anti-icing, and anti-corrosion properties.

A joint project to study glaciers will strengthen scientific cooperation between Italy and China, a Milan-Bicocca University glaciologist says. The university recently signed an agreement with the Chinese Academy of Sciences to study the evolution of glaciers in Alpine, Antarctic and Himalayan regions.
Chinese botanists have collected the seeds of more than 1,100 plant species found in the southwestern Tibet autonomous region and preserved them in a national germplasm bank. The seeds were gathered over the past five years mostly near the upper reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River and on the Qiangtang Grassland, researchers with the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research under the Chinese Academy of Sciences told Xinhua Thursday.
The University of Leeds and the Chinese Academy of Sciences have teamed up to create a joint research institute to develop next generation energy storage systems. The joint research institute is a collaboration between the Institute of Particle Science & Engineering at the University of Leeds and the Institute of Process Engineering (IPE) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
