LOCAL scientists are developing an in-flight wireless entertainment system allowing airline passengers to use cell phones onboard, experts said yesterday. Currently, commercial aircraft use heavy cables for entertainment systems onboard and there are restrictions on cell phones, said officials of the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences at Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park.
The universities of St Andrews and Glasgow in Scotland, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Changchun, are collaborating to better understand and improve polymer solar cell lifetimes. The two-phase project starts in March 2011 and ends in August 2013. The data gathered in the project's first phase will inform potential solutions for extending solar cell lifetimes in the latter phase of the project.
Lu Yongxiang, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, was today conferred the Jawaharlal Nehru Birth Centenary Medal by Indian National Science Academy. Lu, who specialises in mechanical engineering, holds 25 patents in China, Europe and the US and has published over 250 papers in research and engineering education.
