China's first alcohol research lab established at CAS
Although Chinese people began to make alcoholic drinks more than 9,000 years ago, alcohol research in this country has been focused on alcoholic culture and manufacturing. Professional studies on alcoholic toxicity addiction are few.
To promote the studies in the field, Shanghai Alcohol Research Center has recently been established at the Institute for Nutritional Sciences under the CAS Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences.
As a collaborative and multidisciplinary research unit, the Center will provide a strong and effective platform of facilities, staff, and an optimum research environment to support new exploratory and ongoing alcohol research. It will strive to create and implement mechanisms for the transfer of information created from the research to health professionals of the local and world community, and train students in the area of alcohol research.
The Center consists of a team of scientific investigators with broad-based experiences and interests in many disciplines including the molecular biology, genetics, reactive oxygen species, nutrition, cancer biology and immunology, allowing a comprehensive examination of the causes of alcoholism and its effects on human life within the variety of Chinese populations.
