With the support of the National Program on Key Basic Research Projects (dubbed "the 973 Program"), researchers from the CAS Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) have developed the first high-power Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) accelerator in China.
The RFQ accelerator is a major component of the "973: project “Basic Research for Physics and Technologies Related to an Accelerator Driven Clean Nuclear Energy System." By focusing on two selected schemes of the accelerator driven subcritical system (ADS), researcher are making efforts to address some of the problems facing the conventional nuclear power stations dominated by the pressurized water reactors (PWR). The success in RFQ development marks a big step forward for the ADS system studies in China, according to experts.
With the output energy up to3.5MeV and average current of 3mA, the RFQ accelerator, which is independently designed and fabricated by Chinese researchers, is among the leading ones of such facilities in the world.
