New Chip 'Nebulas II' Makes GNSS Device Smaller and Stronger

China's leading provider of satellite navigation and positioning has released an upgraded SoC (system on a chip) that can make high precision Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) devices smaller and stronger.

Beijing BDStar Navigation Co., Ltd unveiled the Nebulas II during the sixth China Satellite Navigation Conference held in Xi'an city, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi province on Wednesday.

The 55nm chip is high-performing and smaller in size and requires a lower power consumption. Hu Gang, a representative of the researchers, said the chip is a self-develop system with completely independent intellectual property rights, that can be compatible with all current satellite navigation systems, including China's Beidou and GPS.

Receivers based on this SoC could be reduced in size by half, it was added.

Hu also stated that the chip can be used in a broad range of applications such as positioning, oil exploration, and landslide monitoring.

BDStar released the multi-system, multi-frequency and high-performance SoC Nebulas I in 2010 and a self-developed 55nm low-power SoC with completely independent intellectual property rights in 2013.

Liu Jingnan, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said the chip meets the development trend of a smaller sized device in the digital age. He calls it a great step forward for China's domestic chips, adding the system still needs to address some problems in regards to compatibility with many frequencies. (ECNS)
