Bai Chunli, executive vice-president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), was elected foreign honorary fellow of National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI) early this year.

    Founded in the year 1930, the National Academy of Sciences, India is the oldest Science Academy of the country. The Academy has currently about 1,390 members and nearly 1,055 fellows who are spread out in all parts of the country. The Academy also has 37 Honorary Fellows and 61 Foreign Fellows. All these fellows are scientists from various disciplines of Science and Technology from all over India and abroad.

    The main objective of the Academy was to provide a national forum for the publication of research work carried out by Indian scientists and to provide opportunities for exchange of views among them.

    NASI select three foreign honorary fellows from scientists across the globe who have made outstanding achievements in science and technology field.  Bai is the first Chinese scientist who was awarded the honor.

    Graduated from the Department of Chemistry, Peking University in 1978, professor Bai received his MS and Ph.D. degrees from CAS Institute of Chemistry in 1981 and 1985. His research areas involve the structure and properties of polymer catalysts, X-ray crystallography of organic compounds, molecular mechanics and EXAFS research on electro-conducting polymers.

    In the mid-1980s, Bai shifted his research orientation to the field of scanning tunneling microscopy, and molecular nanotechnology. He now serves as the chief scientist for the National Steering Committee for Nanoscience and Technology and Director of China National Center for Nano science and technology.
