Prof. Tan Jiazhen, an internationally renowned geneticist, died of illness on 1 Nov. at the age of 100, in Shanghai East China Hospital.

    Prof. Tan, one of the founders of China's genetic science, was elected a CAS Member in 1980, Foreign Associate of the U. S. National Academy of Sciences and fellow of The Third World Academy of Sciences in 1985, Foreign Member of Academia National delle Scienze detta dei XL, Italy in 1987 and honorary life member of the New York Academy of Sciences in 1999.

    Prof. Tan was born in Ningbo, Zhejiang province in 1909. He got Bachelor degree of Science from Soochow University of Soochow in 1930, and Master degree of Science from Yencheng University of Peking in 1932. He got Ph. D. from California Institute of Technology, USA in 1936. In 1937, he was invited by President Zhu Kezhen and accepted the position as a professor in Department of Biology of Chekiang University. After liberation, he held a concurrent post as the dean of Science College. Since 1952, following the nation-wide adjustment of colleges and universities, he moved to Shanghai and became professor and chairman of Biology Department in Fudan University. From 1961, he held the position as the director of Genetics Institute, vice president of Fudan University, provost of School of Life Science and counselor to the president..He gained a distinguished alumni award from Caltech, received Medal of Merit from Konstnz University of Germany and obtained the title as honorary citizen of the State of California.
