Prof. WU Ziliang (WU Tsu-Liang), a prestigious physical metallurgist and a founder of China's atomic bomb,missile and satellite undertakings, died on 24 May in Shanghai.
Born in Pujiang, Zhjiang Province in 1917, Wu received his PhD from Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh, in 1948. In the 1960s, after retuning to China, he conducted a research project and succeeded in manufacturing the 'A' type membrane used for Uranium isotope separation.
Prof. Wu received a first prize of the National Invention Awards and a special prize of the National S&T Progress in 1984 and 1985, respectively. He was honored with a gold medal for his contribution to China's undertakings of atomic bombs,missiles and satellites in 1999.
Prof. Wu was former deputy director of the CAS Shanghai Institute of Metallurgy (predecessor of today's CAS Shanghai Institute of Microsystems and Information Technology). He was elected a CAS Member in 1980.
