In response to the initiation of a Sino-German research project on "Environmental Protection & Sustainable Development of Mega-cities (Urumqi-Changji) in An Arid Area," a seven-member delegation headed by Prof. Bernhard Eitel from Heidelberg University made a visit to the CAS Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography (EGI) on Nov 9. Prof. Zhang Xiaolei, EGI director, held discussions with the German visitors on the cooperation of the project.

    The research project is a key component of the Environmental Protection & Sustainable Development of Future Mega-cities. Sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education, the 11-year and10-million-euro research project will focus on such research topics as the recycling utilization of water resources, energy and wastes as well as human health.

    The project will be carried out according to a four-stage schedule, i.e. a two-year stage for preparations and three three-year stages for its enforcement. In coping with the practical issues and specific conditions at some typical big cities plagued by long-time aridity, such as Urumqi nad Changji in hinterland China, the project is to develop diverse civic planning approaches, principles and suggestions in three aspects: the environmental protection, recyclable economy and the sustainable development of an urban community and to work out feasible and concrete measures for putting the latter three in practice through deepening the cooperation between enterprises of the two countries. In this way, the tripartite development pattern introduced to Urumqi and Changji by the project may be widely popularized to their neighboring cities and residential centers in all directions.

    Under the leadership of the Regional Government of Xinjiang and with coordination of Regional Administration of Environmental Protection, the project will involve various administrative departments, R&D bodies and collegiate communities from Chinese side. Prof. Zhang Xiaolei is invited to work as the technical advisor and at the invitation of the German side, the IOG scientists will take part of the research work.
