A foundation-laying ceremony for the Germplasm Bank for Wildlife in China's Southwest was held on Nov. 29 in Kunming, capital of south China's Yunnan Province.
A foundation-laying ceremony for the Germplasm Bank for Wildlife in China's Southwest was held on Nov. 29 in Kunming, capital of south China's Yunnan Province.
Chaired by President of the CAS Kunming Branch Zhang Zhuangxin, the event was witnessed by high-ranking officials and prestigious scientists from CAS, Yuannan Province, and governmental departments. CAS Vice President Chen Zhu and Vice Governor of Yunnan Province Wu Xiaoqing jointly cut the ribbon for the ceremony.
The 148 million yuan project will be based on the CAS Kunming Institute of Botany and jointly developed and managed by CAS and Yunan Province. Upon its completion in five years time, the bank will be a world-class repository for wildlife germplasm.
As a major basic research project for biodiversity protection and sustainable development in China, said Prof. Chen Zhu at the ceremony, the bank is in the vital interests of the nation. It is of scientific and strategic importance for bio-industry and national germplasm security, he added.
