CAS vice presidents Jiang Mianheng and Shi Erwei unveiled the bronze statue of the late Prof. Zhou Ren (1892-1973) at its relocation ceremony held jointly on Nov. 11 in Shanghai by the CAS Shanghai Institute of Shanghai Microsystem and Information Technology, the CAS Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, and Shanghai Engineering Center for Small Satellites.

    A metallurgist and ceramist, Zhou Ren graduated from Jiangnan Institute of Education in 1910 and received his Master's degree from Cornell University in 1915. He served as director of the Engineering Institute under the former National Central Academy and is considered a pioneer of China's modern Science.

    Prof. Zhou built the first three-speed steel arc furnace in China in 1929. In the 1950s, he endeavored in manufacturing modular irons and extending their application in machinery. He also established the prototype blast-furnace in the former CAS Shanghai Institute of Metallurgy (now the CAS Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology ) in order to study in details the smelting processes for the rare-earth and fluoride constraining Baotou iron ore and the V-Ti rich Panzhihua magnetite ore. The results laid a sound scientific foundation for the optimization of iron smelting processes for Baotou and Panzhihua ores.

    As a forerunner in ceramics, he showed great enthusiasm over ancient Chinese porcelain and zealously advocated the study of some lost glazing technology in ancient pottery. He became CAS member in 1955.
