Prof. Zhu Yongguan
Prof. Zhu Yongguan, an expert in environmental biology from the CAS Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences (RCEES), has recently been invited by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to sit on its Standing Advisory Group on Nuclear Applications (SAGNA).
Established in 2000 as a high-level body reporting directly to the Director General of the IAEA,SAGNA provides advice on the application of nuclear techniques in the programs of food and agriculture, human health, water resources, protection of the marine and terrestrial environment, and physical and chemical applications, in terms of their relevance, delivery and impact. At present, 20 scientists across the world are working for the group.
Prof. Zhu has long been devoted to studies on soil-plant interactions, and its impact on the environment and ecology. His research on the application of isotopic tracing techniques and soil pollution and remediation (including radioactive contaminants) has won recognition from his peers in the world. Apart from this important appointment, Prof. Zhu is also on editorial boards of three international journals. His knowledge and experience "will prove of value to the Group," says IAEA Director General Dr M. EIBaradei.
