Under joint auspices of the CAS Bureau of Life Science and Biotechnology and the CAS Institute of Microbiology, an international symposium "Towards New Era's Microbial Resources Centers" was held on February 15 in Beijing.
Chaired by Prof. Kang Le, director of the CAS Bureau of Life Science and Biotechnology, the meeting was attended by scholars from key institutions in the fields, such as the Chinese Society of Microbiology, the State Key Laboratory of Microbial Resource Development, the CAS Institute of Microbiology, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Federation for Cultural Collections (WFCC), the OECD initiative on BRC, the World Data Centre for Microorganisms (WDCM), NITE Biological Resource Center (NBRC) in Japan and the American Type Culture Collection (ATCC).
In his welcome address, CAS Vice President Chen Zhu emphasized the importance of establishing a national biological resources center (BRC) in China. In addition to a germplasm bank in typical sense, he said, such a center should also include culture collections of microorganisms, genes and strains. He called for close international cooperation in this regard.
Prof. Cao Yihua, deputy director of the Department of Rural and Social Development of the Ministry of Science and Technology, gave a talk on the development of national scientific platforms for natural resources in China.
In the light of the important role of microbial resources for life sciences, biotechnology and related industry, the discussion was focused on the studies and preservation of those resources, and the management of microbial resource centers (MIRCEN).
After the meeting, Prof. Chen held an in-depth discussion with, and presented a letter of engagement as a consultant for CAS BRC to, officials and scholars from international institutions, including WFCC President Jean Swings, OECD-BRC Chair Louis Rechaussat, WDCM Director Hideaki Sugawara, ATCC Consultant for Global Affairs Shung-Chang Jong and NBRC Director Dr. Ken-ichiro Suzuki.
