With the financial support earmarked for botanical garden development from the central government, a garden of common crapemyrtle (
Lagerstroemia indica) has been set up at the Beijing Botanical Garden, an affiliation of the CAS Institute of Botany.
The project was accepted by a panel of botanists headed by Prof. Huang Hongwen, director of the CAS Wuhan Institute of Botany on August 29
The construction of the garden was started in July 2001. After two years of work, the garden has a total of 2,000 individual plants in 40 common crapemyrtle varieties and 40 cultivars of other ornament plants.
