CAS will advance its efforts to promote the development of an oceanological research base in South China, says CAS Vice President Chen Yiyu during his recent inspection tour to the CAS Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry (GIG).
CAS decided to establish the research base as a major strategic initiative in 2001, with an objective to encourage scientists from both the CAS South China Sea Institute of Oceanology and GIG to carry out cutting-edge studies on marginal seas in the light of demands of geological and marine sciences.
Because the South China Sea and South Sea region is the largest typical marginal sea of the Pacific Ocean, its research will be important for understanding its genesis, its relationship with the continent and off-shore mineral deposits, and its impact on the global climate change, Chen stresses. CAS and provincial government of Guangdong are currently discussing the possibilities of jointly setting up the research base, Chen reveals.
