Under the sponsorship of CAS Academic Divisions (CASAD), a panel of CAS members and leading experts held a symposium on China's agriculture, farmers and rural economy on June 13 in Beijing.
The participants of the meeting, which was presided over by Prof. Li Zhensheng, a leading expert in agriculture, included CAS President Lu Yongxiang, leaders of CASAD Working Committee on Consultation and Evaluation (WCCE) Zhao Zhongxian and Sun Honglie, and Zhang Xinshi, Liu Changming, Shi Yulin and Li Jiayang.
In his introductory speech, Prof. Lu Yongxiang gave an exposition of the general framework and requirements for the CASAD consultative work on the national long- and mid-term scheme for S&T development.
Three scholars delivered reports on recent progresses in sustainable development of regional agriculture, hi-tech application to farming practice and the precautionary system for national food security. In line with the current state and actual conditions, the seminar provides a forum for a full discussion on China's agricultural development, farmers and rural economy as one of the key category in the draft of the scheme.
The panelists agree that the consultation should be able to identify, in the light of the country's strategic agricultural demands in a long run, the strategic demands and related key issues for studies into issues of agriculture, farmers and rural economy, pinpoint key scientific and technological issues in agricultural development and form an consultative report featured with CAS disciplinary buildup.
The panel demands that its research groups submit their detailed work outlines by the end of June.
