The CAS Institute of Atmospheric Physics has received the Computerworld 21st-Century Achievement Awards. 12 organizations were announced the award winners on June 2. The photo shows the 60 finalists who were chosen to participate in the competition.

The CAS Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) received on June 2 the 21st-Century Achievement Award from the Computerworld Honors Program for visionary use of information technology in the category of Science. The awarding ceremony was held at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C..

Founded in 1988/89, the Computerworld Honors Program searches for and recognizes individuals who have demonstrated vision and leadership as they strive to use information technology in innovative ways across ten categories: Business & Related Services; Education & Academia; Environment, Energy & Agriculture; Finance, Insurance & Real Estate; Government & Non-Profit Organizations; Manufacturing; Media, Arts & Entertainment; Medicine; Science; and Transportation.

From more than 400 nominations submitted this year by the 100 industry chairmen and CEO who serve on the program's Chairmen Committee, 313 were honored as Laureates at ceremonies in San Francisco, on April 6, 2003, when their case studies officially became part of the Computerworld Honors 2003 Collection. Of these, 60 Finalists were chosen by a panel of distinguished judges to attend the awards gala in Washington, D.C., at which 12 were announced winners of the award.

Supported by a large scale application software running in computer systems, scientists from the IAP State Key Laboratory of Numerical Modeling for Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysical Fluid Dynamics (LASG/IAP) have conducted large-scale climate modeling, which, with particular emphasis on El Nino cycles and Asian monsoons, helps China plan for, and mitigate the 60-180 billion yuan annual economic losses from, climate change and natural disasters.

This honor results from the long-standing devotion of the IAS scientists to scientific research and innovation, says CAS President Lu Yongxiang in a congratulatory letter to the institute.
