The nameplate is unveiled for Northeast Institute of Geography and Agricultural Ecology, which was formed through merger of two former CAS Institutes.
According to the work report delivered at the CAS annual work conference March 26 to 28, CAS made progress on structural adjustment to the distribution of S&T resources and organizational reform over the past year.
In 2002, CAS completed the examination and approval procedures to enlist existing research institutes, schools and supporting organizations in the pilot project of the Knowledge Innovation Program (KIP). Nineteen research institutes, three literature and information centers, two schools and two support organizations were allowed participation after stringent examinations were done of their qualification and eligibility. The research institutes include the Northeast Institute of Geography and Agricultural Ecology formed through merger of the former Changchun Institute of Geography and the Heilongjiang Institute of Agricultural Modernization in Harbin, the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry formed through merger of the former Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry and Changsha Institute of Geotectonics, the Institute of Genetics and Development Biology formed through merger of former Institute of Genetics and Development Institute and Shjjiazhuang Institute of Agricultural Modernization, and the Hefei Institutes of Physical Sciences formed through merger of the CAS Hefei Branch, the CAS Institute of Plasma Physics, Anhui Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics and Institute of Solid State Physics. At the same time, three CAS organizations were renamed. The Changsha Institute of Agricultural Modernization, Shanghai Institute of Nucleus Research and Microelectronics Research and Development Center had their respective names changed into the Institute of Subtropical Agriculture, Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics and Institute of Microelectronics.
CAS decided to set up the Beijing Institute of Genomic, Shanghai Institute of Nutriology and Health, and Institute of Qingzang Plateau Research, and preparations for their establishment have been proceeding in an orderly manner. Of these three, two are to be independent corporate entities. CAS has applied to the higher-up authorities for approval of their establishment, along with the establishment of Center for Optical-Electronics, a decision on whose establishment was made back in 2001.
Altogether, 112 work units were operating directly under the CAS headquarters at the end of 2002. These broke down into 84 research institutes, three schools, 12 administrative organs including CAS headquarters and branches, seven support organizations, two organizations of press and publication, and four organizations for other lines of work. The number of research institutes had by then been cut from 119 in 1998, a reduction of 29.4%. (H.Guo)
