A workshop on the Protection and Utilization of Hainan Tropical Biological Resources was held March 1-2, 2003 at Haikou, capital of south China' s Hainan Province. Jointly sponsored by CAS Academic Division of Biology, Hainan Office of CAS Guangdong Branch, and the Department of Science and Technology of Hainan Provincial Government, the event was intended for consultation on the CAS program on the subject.
The dedicated speeches and discussion of the meeting cover such topics as present conditions, utilization prospects, and protective measures of Hainan Island' s tropical animal resources, plant & herbal plant resources, oceanic biological resources, and crops & cash crops resources; safety concerns over utilization of Hainan biological resources; and the utilization and protection of biological resources in the development of tourist industry in the locality.
The participants, including CAS members and experts, offered suggestions for the protection and sustainable development of Hainan tropical biological resources. They also agreed upon the deadline for the consultative report.
