The International Digital Earth Workshop was conducted December 11, 2002 at CAS Institute of Remote Sensing Applications (IRSA) in Beijing.
At the gathering, Guo Huadong, chief scientist of IRSA Digital Earth Science Laboratory, presented the Digital Earth Prototype System, an important product of CAS Knowledge Innovation Program. Through computer-assisted demonstration, Guo introduced the theory, technology, and application of DEPS version 1.0.
The system may be applied to three levels of operation, namely, global, countrywide, and regional. Its current applications include crop growth monitoring, flood monitoring, urban dynamic change monitoring, the three-dimensional emulation system for Olympic Games venue planning, and the three-dimensional, interactive emulation system for the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, where China's legislature, the National People's Congress, assembles for deliberations on state affairs.
The development of DEPS falls into three phases. DEPS Version 1.0 is run on a single computer. The system is to have advanced performance and full-fledged functions by the year 2010.
