Pu Xinming and Zhang Yongshan, scientists with the CAS Institute of Oceanography, are among members of China's 19th Antarctic scientific expedition team scheduled to depart on November 20, 2002. This will be the 19th time for CAS scientists to join such an expedition.
The CAS scientists will concentrate on studying of "The Process of Biomass Production in the Antarctic Ocean" and "The Characteristics of Antarctic Biological Resources and Their Applied Basic Research". The projects are important parts of the CAS knowledge innovation program "Global Changes as Manifested on the Antarctic Convergent Zone--Dome A Fracture Plane" and the public welfare project "A Geo-environmental Survey and Research of the Key Processes in the Antarctic" launched by the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology.
Pu and Zhang are to work on the Antarctic Ocean for 133 days.
