Under the auspices of the Xiangshan Science Conferences (XSSC), a symposium was held from 17 to 19 November in Beijing. Its main topics included: environmental changes in mountainous areas and national ecological safety; dynamic processes of mountain surface and disaster control; mechanisms for renewable resources development and their sustainable utilization; and risk management of the mountainous areas. On the basis of an analysis of the status quo of the mountainous science at home and abroad, the participants held discussions on the roadmap and framework for the development of such a discipline in China so as to provide guidance for its theoretical development, and promote relevant studies for the sustainable development in the mountainous areas.

    The rapid economic and population growth have highlighted the increasingly acute contradiction between ever intensified exploration of resources (such as land, water, minerals and forests) and the fragile ecological and environmental settings, according to participants. The frequent mountainous disasters have posed threats to national key engineering projects, and endangered the very foundation of the country's economic and eco-environmental safety.

    Scholars stressed that the mountain studies have become a hot topic and a science frontier. China is a mountainous country, whose mighty mountains account for 65% of the world's total. It is of importance for China to develop a system of mountain sciences in light of its unique geographic characters. It will also be beneficial for this country to play a leading role in the global community of earth sciences and have a significant impact on its development.

    The meeting were co-executive chairs by ZHENG Du (CAS Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research); LU Dadao (CAS Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research); CUI Peng (the CAS Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment) and WANG Zhaoyin (Department of Hydraulic Engineering, Tsinghua University).
