CAS President LU Yongxiang speaks about development of the information industry on 11 November at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Nobel Laureates Beijing Forum.

    The country is still facing many challenges in the development of its information industry despite its rapid economic, scientific and technological developments in the past three decades, says CAS President LU Yongxiang.

    Prof. Lu, also vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Nobel Laureates Beijing Forum.

    "The Chinese government attaches stragegic importance to the development of its informtion industry and will pursue a new way of industrialization, through which informationization and industrialization can co-develop and boost each other."

    Lu stressed China will further introduce foreign experiences from science and management fields to benefit the development of its own information sector.

    "China has seen a rapid development in its information industry, but is still lagged much behind in the area compared with developed countries. The country needs to continue to borrow advanced foreign expertises and make them well combined with China's own national conditions."

    Seven former Nobel Prize laureates and four winners of the Turing Award, a prize established by the US Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), were invited to the forum that addressed information and innovation this year.

    Besides giving lectures and taking part in several seminars, the experts to the four-day forum will visit some colleges and middle schools in Beijing and attend interactive activities to promote scientific knowledge amongst local citizens.

    Started in 2005, the Beijing Forum mainly targets the harmonious development of human society. It has set discussion topics on economic development, life science, people's health, energy and environment in the past three years. (Source: CRI)
