With the objective of making exchanges, exploring approaches for integrated research into water resources, and giving full play to the Steering Committee of the CAS Water Resources Research Center (WRRC), the second meeting of WRRC experts and a symposium on WRRC development were held at the CAS Institute of Geographic Science and Resources Research (IGSNRR) in Beijing on 4 and 5 December, 2007.

    The meeting of Steering Committee was held on 4 December and was chaired by WRRC director LIU Changming and WRRC Vice Director WANG Jiyang. It brought together Director-general of the CAS Bureau of Science and Technology for Resources and Environment FU Bojie and other members of the committee. After listening to the work report given by WRRC Director XIA Jun, the participants made a multi-faceted discussion on the Center's development, its staged targets for platform reconstruction, priority areas in the country's hydrological research and key orientations, the Center's operating mechanism, leading to suggestion of many constructive ideas and proposals.

    On the next day, a symposium on the center's development convened with participants of some 70 leaders and experts from hydrology-related institutes within the CAS system. LIU and WANG delivered keynote lectures, elucidating the disciplinary posers arising from the science of hydrology and nationwide exploitation and utilization of the underground water resources for the 21st century.

    The participants made discussions on R&D results, experience and characteristics of the research on water resources from different angles. Also, they aired some suggestions on the Center's operation mode, mechanisms and integrated research of the discipline.

    Water resources are a hot research toic in China. For a long time in the past, CAS has done a great amount of basic and applied studies in this aspect, leading to a bumper harvest of rewarding R&D results.

    According to sources, it was an unprecedented event in CAS history for so many experts from various different institutes and the field to meet under the same roof. In addition, the meeting is of special importance as it will play a positive and promoting role in the comprehensive integration of different studies in this regard and facilitate the Center's infrastructure construction and academic upgrade.

    The scholars were from CAS Bureau of Science and Technology for Resources and Environment, and nearly 20 CAS research bodies, including Institute of Geographic Science and Resources Research, Institute of Geology & Geophysics, the Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute, Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Nanjing Institute of Geography and Limnology, Center for Ecology & Environmental Research, Institute of Water-and-Soil Conservation, Chengdu Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, CAS Xinjiang Institute of Geography and Ecology, Institute of Genetics and Development, Shenyang Institute of Applied Ecology, Nanjing Institute of Soil Science, Wuhan Institute of Hydro-biology, Wuhan Institute of Geodesy & Geophysics, Institute of Hydro-engineering  and Ecololgy, South China Institute of Botany, Institute of S&T Policy and Management, and Institute of Remote-sensing Applications,

    The CAS Water Resources Research Center (WRRC) has recently been established in Beijing. Its opening ceremony was held on 3 December, 2006. Its objective of the new center is to pool research resources from various CAS institutes to carry out strategic, interdisciplinary and forwarding studies on water resources at national level or in major regions.  Affiliated to IGSNRR, the Center is expected to produce a number of research results, among others, in strategic studies, including a blue book entitled Observation on China's Water Resources
