Prof. Liu Dongsheng, a pioneer in the field, says this practice holds a unique scientific paradigm with an obvious effect.

    To celebrate the interdisciplinary expeditionary research of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (Tibetan Plateau) over the past 30 years, a symposium was held on Oct. 21 and 22 in Beijing. Chaired by CAS Vice President Chen Yiyu, the meeting was attended by heavyweights in the field, including experts of several generations ranging from veteran experts in their eighties to young researchers, State leaders and local government officials.

    The intensive uplifting of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has been one of the most important events in the past two million years of the earth history, which strongly affects the physical environment and human activities both in the plateau itself and its nearby regions. As a natural laboratory, the Plateau has attracted attention of researchers from geo-science, biology, resources and environment.

    The interdisciplinary studies on the Plateau has always been one of the major research area of CAS. In 1972, CAS formulated a plan for comprehensive studies on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (1973-1980). One year later, an interdisciplinary expedition was established by CAS and the studies have been promptly developed ever since.

    The work has made world-acknowledged achievements that will lay a solid foundation and secure a irreplaceable position for Chinese scientists in the field, brought up a great number of researchers, and developed a "Qinghai-Tibet Spirit" with unique connotations, says CAS President Lu Yongxiang. "The core of the Spirit lies in keeping the long-term objectives in mind, taking roots in interdisciplinary studies, implementing high-level and open research, adhering academic democracy, promoting exchanges and cooperation and encouraging original innovation."

    Prof. Sun Honglie, a leading scientist in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau research, said in his keynote speech that the research work have not only produced many scientific results, but rich spiritual achievements.

    Prof. Liu Dongsheng, a pioneer of the research topic, extols the spirit by a "Qinghai-Tibet Effect," saying this unprecedented, successful and world-significant practice holds a unique scientific paradigm with an obvious effect.

    "It also means an agglomerating effect in natural exploration, an infiltrating effect of different disciplines, a catalytic effect of talent training, and a ever-spreading social effect," Sun added.
